Shopping and cooking plan
6 lbMain protein (raw, boneless)
3 lbEach of 2 side dishes
1.13 lbSalad greens
18Bread rolls
48Drinks (servings)
18 lbIce
Assumptions: 8 oz raw boneless protein per adult (about 6 oz cooked), 3-5 oz of each side depending on how many you serve, 1 1/2 rolls and 1 1/2 lb of ice per guest, and 2 drinks per adult in the first hour plus 1 per hour after. Children count as half portions. If the protein is bone-in, plan on about 12 oz per adult instead.

How to use this calculator

  1. 1Enter the number of adults and children.
  2. 2Enter how many side dishes you're serving and how long the party lasts.
  3. 3Choose plated or buffet service.
  4. 4Read your shopping amounts for protein, sides, salad, bread, drinks, and ice.
Tip: Round up for buffets and outdoor events. People eat more when they serve themselves.

How it's calculated

Per adult: 8 oz raw protein, 3-5 oz of each side, 1.5 oz salad greens, 1.5 rolls, 2 drinks + 1 per extra hour, 1.5 lb ice

We do the math at full precision and only round the final answer, so the numbers you see are as close as kitchen measurements allow. The assumptions and limits are listed alongside.

Worked example

Scenario: Planning a barbecue dinner for 12 guests.
Inputs12 adults, 2 side dishes, 3-hour party
Calculation12 × 8 oz = 6 lb meat; 12 × 4 oz = 3 lb per side; 12 × 1.5 = 18 rolls
Result6 lb meat, 3 lb of each side, 18 rolls, 18 lb ice

Common questions

How much ice do you need for a party?

About 1-2 pounds per guest. Plan on the higher end in hot weather or if you're also chilling drinks in coolers.
